Zhengzhou Municipal Bureau of Sports and Zhongyuan District People’s Government are serving as co-organizers, while Zhengzhou Culture, Tourism, and Sports Group is responsible for the event's operations.
As the highest level international event ever held in Zhengzhou ,the UIPM 2024 Pentathlon and Laser Run World Championships, Zhengzhou will be the most important international event held in China in the Olympic year, the most significant qualification tournament before the Paris Olympic Games. This event , simultaneously, means it is the first time for one city to hold two World Championships at the same period in China. At that time, more than 1,000 athletes from over 60 countries and regions in the world will participate in this event.
Modern Pentathlon is a modern adaptation of the Ancient Pentathlon. The Ancient Pentathlon, which dates back over 2,700 years, consisted of laser run, long jump, javelin throw, discus throw, and wrestling, and was featured in the 18th Ancient Olympic Games in 708 BC. In 1896, Pierre de Coubertin revived the Olympic Games and organized the first modern Olympic Games. To carry on the tradition of the Ancient Pentathlon and create a sport that would encompass an athlete's endurance, skills, and intelligence, Pierre de Coubertin proposed a similar competition with multiple events. The Swedish Military Sports Association, following his vision, introduced the pentathlon with five events: 300-meter freestyle swimming, 4,000-meter cross-country laser run, shooting, riding, and fencing. These sports, which were widely practiced and practical in early 20th-century Europe, formed the foundation for the development of Modern Pentathlon. In 1912, Modern Pentathlon made its debut as an official competition at the 5th Olympic Games in Sweden, marking the beginning of a new era for the sport. Pierre de Coubertin is widely recognized as the father of Modern Pentathlon.
Today, Modern Pentathlon consists of five individual events: fencing, swimming, riding, shooting, and laser run. The winner is determined by their performance across these four consecutive matches.
The fundamental rules for the five individual events are as follows:
Swimming: A 200-meter freestyle swimming race.
Fencing: The competition begins with a ranking round using a round-robin format, where each participant competes against every other participant. The final rankings are based on the accumulated scores. Following this, there is a knockout stage called the "piste," where the lowest-ranked fencer challenges higher-ranked opponents one by one. The victor remains on the piste to continue challenging opponents, while the defeated is eliminated.
Riding: Horses provided by the organizers are assigned to participants through a draw. After a 20-minute warm-up period, the competition involves navigating obstacle jumps.
Laser Run (Combined Event): This event combines laser shooting with laser run. After completing a designated laser run distance, athletes enter the shooting range and take five shots at a target 10 meters away. They then resume laser run for a set distance before returning to the shooting range for another round. Four rounds of shooting are conducted, and once the fourth round is completed, athletes run directly to the finish line.
The Laser Run features a staggered start. Starting order is determined by the combined rankings from swimming, fencing, and riding events. The delay time for each athlete to start is calculated based on the points difference between them and the top-ranked athlete. The first athlete to cross the finish line becomes the overall champion of the competition.
Modern Pentathlon's diversity, comprehensiveness, and complexity make it a highly demanding sport. It pushes athletes to their physical and mental limits, requiring proficiency in both aquatic and terrestrial disciplines while showcasing a harmonious blend of intelligence and courage. It embodies the pursuit of cultivating a perfect character.
