Speech by Vice Mayor Chen Hongmin of the Zhengzhou Municipal People’s Government
Deputy Mayor, Chen Hongmin of the Zhengzhou Municipal People’s Government delivered a speech, alongside Dr. Klaus Schormann, President of the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM), as they jointly unveiled the countdown plaque for the highly anticipated the UIPM 2024 Pentathlon and Laser Run World Championships, Zhengzhou.
Good afternoon, Dr. Klaus Schormann, Chairman Ji Daoming, esteemed guests, and members of the press.
In line with the strategic directives of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China to accelerate the development of sports in our country, Zhengzhou is fully committed to becoming an international sports event city. By hosting prestigious international tournaments, our objective is to position Zhengzhou as a renowned global sports hub, a focal point for Chinese culture, and a premier destination for Kung Fu enthusiasts. After more than three months of dedicated efforts, on August 25th of this year, the UIPM officially announced that the UIPM 2024 Pentathlon World Championships, which include the modern pentathlon qualification event for the Paris Olympic Games and UIPM 2024 Laser Run World Championships, will be held in Zhengzhou from May 30th to June 9th, 2024. This event has four major highlights:
Firstly, the competition holds great significance as modern pentathlon is an internationally recognized A-level sport and one of the 25 core Olympic disciplines. Comprising fencing, swimming, riding, and laser run (running and shooting), modern pentathlon is often referred to as "the perfect sport." The UIPM 2024 Pentathlon and Laser Run World Championships, Zhengzhou, one of the highest-level international competitions held in Zhengzhou, will also serve as the qualification event for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and will be co-hosted with the UIPM 2024 Laser Run World Championships.
Secondly, the event provides an excellent opportunity to showcase Zhengzhou to more than 60 countries worldwide, with over 2,000 athletes participating. This competition is not only another prestigious international sports event held in Zhengzhou but also the final edition of the long-standing equestrian event within the century-old modern pentathlon. Over 2,000 exceptional athletes from more than 60 member countries of the UIPM will compete for 14 gold, 14 silver, and 14 bronze medals in the seven events of the UIPM Pentathlon World Championships, as well as 168 gold, 168 silver, and 168 bronze medals in the seven events of the UIPM Laser Run World Championships, presenting a splendid sports event for global audiences.
Thirdly, the event adopts a new mode of operation, combining government and market forces to reflect the modern approach to sports event management. The competition is organized by the UIPM and co-hosted by the CMPA, Henan Provincial Bureau of Sports, and Zhengzhou Municipal People's Government, with the cooperation of Zhengzhou Municipal Bureau of Sports and Zhongyuan District People's Government. This collaboration between the government and the market allows for better utilization of the market flexibility of enterprises, adapting to the laws of modern sports and aligning with international rules in terms of event introduction, bidding, and operation models.
Lastly, the event will be presented in an innovative manner, allowing domestic and international audiences to experience the excitement of "the perfect sport" online. With the theme of "green, openness, ecology, and technology," we will focus on promoting riding competitions and the development of laser run industries, contributing to the integration of culture, tourism, and sports. During the competition, we will innovate the dissemination and presentation methods by offering "online viewing" experiences through platforms such as Douyin and Kuaishou, enabling interactive engagement with top international athletes.
Zhengzhou is a vibrant city that embodies a rich historical and modern spirit, characterized by vitality, sporting enthusiasm, charm, and happiness. Through this competition, we will utilize sports as a means to provide a platform for global athletes to enhance mutual understanding and foster friendship. We also hope that participants, referees, and friends from around the world can seize the opportunity to explore and experience Zhengzhou's unique cultural heritage, scenic beauty, and delicious cuisine while participating and spectating the sports events.
